Scrub FAQ Library
Answers to common questions about scrub fit, sizing, fabrics, care, collections, student buying, premium value, group ordering, embroidery, and shopping with confidence.
Fit & Sizing
Do scrubs run big or small?
It depends on the collection more than the brand name. Many lines are built in either a classic roomier fit or a modern more shaped fit. “Runs big” usually means the cut has extra ease through the chest, waist, hip, or thigh. “Runs small” usually means the style has more shaping or a slimmer leg.
How should scrub tops fit?
A scrub top should let you lift your arms, reach forward, bend, and move without pulling tight across the shoulders or exposing your midsection. The neckline should sit flat without gapping, and the chest should lie smoothly without strain.
How should scrub pants fit?
Great scrub pants should stay up, move freely, and keep a professional line. The waistband should feel secure without digging. The rise should allow you to sit without pulling down in the back, and the thigh should allow stairs, squats, and long shifts without strain.
Joggers vs straight-leg: which is better for hospitals?
Neither is automatically better. Joggers taper at the ankle and can help keep hems cleaner. Straight-leg pants look more traditional and may fit stricter dress codes better. The right choice depends on your workplace policy and personal fit preference.
What if I’m curvy, athletic, petite, or tall?
The goal is not to force your body into a scrub. The goal is to choose a cut that matches your proportions. Curvy shoppers often need room through the hips and thighs without extra bulk at the waist. Athletic builds may need shoulder and thigh mobility. Petite and tall shoppers should prioritize the right inseam whenever possible.
Should I size up if I’m between sizes?
For modern fit styles with less stretch, sizing up may help. For performance stretch styles, many shoppers can stay true to size. Also consider whether you plan to layer underscrubs or jackets under or over the set.
Fabric & Tech
Polyester vs rayon vs spandex: what does each one do?
- Polyester: durability, wrinkle resistance, and color retention.
- Rayon: softness and drape for a smoother hand feel.
- Spandex: stretch and recovery so the garment can move and bounce back.
What is stretch recovery, and why does it matter?
Stretch recovery is how well a fabric snaps back after movement. Two scrubs can both feel stretchy in the fitting room, but one may hold shape through a full shift while another starts to bag at the knees, seat, or elbows.
What does moisture-wicking actually mean?
Moisture-wicking fabric helps move moisture away from the skin so it can evaporate faster. In real life, that usually means less sticking, less damp feeling, and a more comfortable shift.
Care & Stains
Do scrubs shrink?
Some scrubs can shrink, especially with high-heat drying. Many modern scrubs are polyester blends, which typically shrink less than cotton-heavy fabrics, but heat can still affect fit, elastic, and long-term garment performance.
How do I remove common stains from scrubs?
Act quickly, blot instead of rubbing, pre-treat, then wash according to the care label. Stains usually respond best when treated before heat sets them.
How do I keep scrubs from pilling?
Pilling is usually caused by friction. Wash scrubs separately from heavy items like towels and jeans, turn them inside out, avoid overloaded wash cycles, and do not over-dry on high heat.
Students
How many scrub sets do students really need?
Most students do best with at least 2–3 sets for lighter schedules and 4 or more sets for heavier clinical rotations. Your school policy, clinical frequency, laundry schedule, and required color matter most.
What are good scrub collections for students?
Good student scrub options usually balance comfort, durability, price, and availability. Strong lanes include HH Works, MedCouture Insight, Allura by Cherokee, and Achieve by Cherokee.
New Nurses
What scrub collections are best for 12-hour shifts?
For long shifts, prioritize stretch, breathability, pocket function, and a waistband that stays comfortable. Strong options include HH360 by Healing Hands, Cherokee Allura, MedCouture Amp, and FORM by Cherokee.
I run hot or cold. What should I look for?
If you run hot, look for lightweight, breathable fabrics and moisture-wicking performance. If you run cold, choose mid-weight scrubs and plan for an approved jacket, warm-up, or underscrub layer.
